Faces at a Funeral
Cold stone steps, a dark room in the basement, my uncle’s tight embrace.
My uncle’s face is empty, his eyes wet as he reads a letter of good-bye. He blinks out a tear and chokes over his words. My uncle’s face is lonely.
My aunt’s face is smiling, full of light. She grins widely, her bright eyes glowing with hope. She’s dressed in white, holding flowers. My aunt’s face is paper, the cover of a program.
Faces of family I don’t know. Cold eyes, confused smiles. Scornful glares, sinister mouths. These faces say I am not welcome here.
